Come Like A Child

Sep 02 2011

This week was "back to school" time for many of us. My middle child Caleb had his first day of kindergarten. As I watched him get on the bus for the first time, I could see he was a little afraid. But I could also sense his excitement! He had reached a milestone in his life that he had only known previously from watching his older brother experience. Waiting in the front yard for the bus to come, he pulled me aside and said, "Dad, I am a little afraid." I held him and told him he was going to do great, and that I was proud of him. We smiled at each other, and his fear seemed to subside.

As the bus pulled away from our street, with him looking and waiving to me in the window, I couldn't help but think of our master's words - "Come like a child." Many of the great theologians and reformers of the past said that fear of the Lord was a necessary prerequisite to experiencing His majesty. A humbleness that speaks of ceratin innocence gone past...clouded from the storms of life. We are left exposed before our maker. But when we come, meek as we are, we are embraced and comforted. Our fear subsides, because we experience His love. Our Father's love. And the gaps of tension seem to dissipate. We are made whole!

Today I ask you to join me in coming before the Lord humble, yet filled with excitement. What will He say to us today? Where will He lead us? What comfort will He bring? May the possibilities dance in our heads as we await His prompting. Such opportunities await those who live in this beautiful tension of being the passionate meek!
